To block NSFW on Reddit, log in at reddit.com, open Settings → Preferences, and turn off Show mature (18+) content. That hides NSFW posts and communities on every device, and it also keeps search on safe mode. iPhone users must do this on the website, because the toggle isn't in the iOS app.

This guide gives you the exact settings for web, iPhone, Android and old Reddit, plus safe search, muting NSFW subreddits, feed cleanup, Reddit's new age checks, and hard blocks (DNS, Screen Time, blockers) for when a toggle isn't enough. There's also a troubleshooting section for when the setting seems to undo itself.

Why One Toggle Isn't Enough on Reddit

Ripe peach seen through a pane of frosted glass on a lilac backdrop, a visual metaphor for how to block NSFW on Reddit

Reddit is not a porn site, but it hosts a lot of adult communities. Its moderator help pages say that "all Not Safe For Work (NSFW) content on Reddit is required to be marked as such" (Post Actions — Reddit Help). So the main filter works on labels.

Labels have two weak points:

  • People apply them. The same page notes that if a member "forgets to mark their post as NSFW," other members will often report it. Until someone does, it shows up like any other post.

  • You can flip the setting back in seconds. There's no password on the mature content toggle. In a weak moment, the only thing between you and NSFW communities is a switch you control.

Reddit's feed also learns from you. Reddit says its Home feed recommendations use machine learning and take into account things like "what types of posts you've upvoted or commented on in the past" (What are home feed recommendations?). In other words, past late-night browsing can shape what you're shown now, even after the NSFW toggle is off.

So the plan has four layers: switch off NSFW, lock down search, clean up your feed, then add a block outside Reddit that you can't undo on impulse. If you've already done this for X, the logic is the same as our guide to turning off sensitive content on X.

  • 13 — Minimum age to use Reddit

  • 18+ — Age to view NSFW content

  • 1,000 — Communities you can mute

  • 250 — Joined communities shown in sidebar

Step 1: Turn Off the Reddit Mature Content Setting

A white light switch flipped off beside a peach in shadow, turning off mature content to block NSFW on Reddit

This is the main switch. Reddit says that once your settings are saved, the change "will be updated across all platforms" (How do I view NSFW communities?). You only need to change it once per account.

On reddit.com (desktop or phone browser)

  1. Log in at reddit.com and open Settings.

  2. Go to the Preferences tab.

  3. Turn Show mature (18+) content to off.

Reddit's help pages use slightly different names for the same switch. On some screens it reads Show NSFW Content (18+), listed under a Content section. It's the same setting.

On iPhone and iPad

You won't find the toggle in the app. Reddit says that "due to Apple requirements, the toggles to manage NSFW (18+) content have been removed from the Reddit iOS app" (Why is Reddit asking for my age?).

  1. Open Safari and log in at reddit.com (mobile web works, so you don't need a computer).

  2. Go to Settings → Preferences and turn off the mature content toggle.

  3. Close and reopen the Reddit app. Reddit says changes made on the web sync to the app automatically.

On Android

According to the Official Reddit App FAQ for Android:

  1. Tap your avatar to open your profile.

  2. Tap the hamburger menu (three lines) near the top right, then Settings.

  3. Under View options, turn Show mature content (I'm over 18) to off.

On old Reddit (old.reddit.com)

  1. Log in and open your preferences.

  2. Under content options, uncheck I am over eighteen years old and willing to view adult content and uncheck the option to include not safe for work (NSFW) search results in searches.

What about "Blur mature images"?

Reddit also offers Blur mature (18+) images and media on the web and in the Android app. With blur on, Reddit says NSFW content "will still show up in your feed, but it will be blurred until you tap to reveal the content."

For someone trying to quit porn, blur is the weaker choice. The post is still there, the title is still readable, and one tap reveals it. Turn Show mature content off instead.

Reddit's age checks (what changed)

Reddit says it confirms "you are 18+ before you can access Not Safe for Work (NSFW) content or mature communities" (Why is Reddit asking for my age?). As of October 2026:

  • Signals first. Reddit predicts your age group from your account's age, email domain, activity, any birthdate you gave, and app store signals. If it decides you're an adult, you generally won't be asked for more.

  • UK. Under the Online Safety Act, Reddit asks for your birthdate when you try to open mature or restricted content. You can confirm through your Apple account or Reddit's partner Persona, with a selfie or ID (United Kingdom: Online Safety Act).

  • Teens. For users aged 13 to 18, Reddit automatically turns on "protective, safe-by-design defaults."

If you're an adult in recovery and Reddit hasn't verified your age, that friction is on your side. You don't have to finish the check.

Step 2: Make Sure Reddit Safe Search Stays On

Search is where many relapses start: "just checking" a name, a community or a word. Reddit's search help explains how Safe Search works (Available search features):

  • With Safe Search on, "you will only see Safe For Work (SFW) results."

  • The Safe Search toggle only appears after you confirm you're 18+ by turning on Show mature (18+) content.

  • Your choice stays the way you last set it "unless you turn off your Show mature (18+) content toggle." When you turn mature content back on, "your Safe Search toggle may reset."

That gives you a quick check. If you can see a Safe Search toggle at all, your mature content setting is on. Go back to Step 1. With mature content off, search stays SFW and the switch to change it is hidden.

Even with Safe Search on, notice when your thumb heads for the search bar late at night. That's usually an urge, not curiosity. It's a good moment to put the phone down or open a tool built for urges, like QUITTR's Panic Button.

Step 3: Block NSFW Subreddits by Muting, Leaving and Blocking

Turning off mature content handles labeled NSFW communities. This step handles the gray zone: "SFW" communities full of thirst posts, fitness or "rate me" communities that keep pulling you somewhere else, and accounts that promote adult content.

Leave communities you joined in the past

Start with your joined list. Anything you joined during a bad stretch is still feeding your Home feed.

  • Web: open the community from the left sidebar and click Joined at the top right to leave.

  • iOS and Android: tap the menu icon at the top left, pick the community, tap Joined, then choose leave (How to join or leave a community).

Mute the communities you keep getting shown

Muting goes further than leaving. Reddit says a muted community won't appear in your notifications, Home feed (including recommendations) or Popular feed (What is community muting?). You can mute up to 1,000 communities.

  1. Visit the community.

  2. Open the overflow menu (the three-dot icon) and select Mute r/[community name]. In the apps, confirm with Yes.

  3. Manage your list later on the web under Preferences → Muted communities, or in the apps under Settings → Account settings for u/[username] → Manage muted communities (in the safety section).

Two catches. First, muting doesn't stop you from visiting the community directly. Second, if you turn on notifications for a muted community, Reddit removes it from your muted list and it comes back into your feeds. Don't touch notification settings for anything you've muted.

Use "Show fewer posts like this"

When a recommended post is borderline, open its overflow menu and choose Show fewer posts like this. Reddit says that after you do, "you won't get suggestions from that community again." In the apps you'll also get an option to mute the community. Take it.

Block accounts that post or promote adult content

In the Android app, tap the username to open the profile, tap the overflow menu in the top right and select Block. Reddit says you "will no longer see posts and comments by that user." The iPhone app has the same option in the profile's menu, labeled Block account. Blocked accounts are listed under your account settings if you ever need to review them.

Turn off Home feed recommendations

This removes posts from communities you haven't joined, which is where most surprises come from. On reddit.com, go to Preferences and turn off Show recommendations in home feed. In the iOS and Android apps, go to account settings, scroll to Privacy, and turn off the same option (What are home feed recommendations?).

Reddit is also testing a split Home feed with For You and Following tabs for a small group of users. Reddit describes Following as "a dedicated feed of just the conversations happening from communities you are a part of or users you follow" (Changelog, October 8, 2026). If you have it, stay on Following.

Step 4: Build a Clean Custom Feed

A bento box of wholesome fruit with a peach left outside, building a clean custom feed to block NSFW on Reddit

Once your joined list is clean, give yourself one place to land that you chose on purpose. A custom feed groups several communities into a single feed, and you can keep it private (What is a custom feed?).

  • Web: visit a community you want, open the overflow menu in the Community Details box, select Add To Custom Feed → Create A Custom Feed, name it, and click update.

  • iOS and Android: tap the menu icon at the top left, scroll to Custom Feeds, create one, then search for and add communities.

  • Old Reddit: click the thin gray bar on the left edge of the home page and select create under multireddits.

A few hygiene rules that help:

  1. Only add communities with active moderators and clear SFW rules. Hobby, local, work and learning communities are usually safest.

  2. Open your custom feed instead of Home or Popular. Bookmark it in your browser so it's the first thing you see.

  3. Review it monthly. Communities change. If a community starts drifting toward thirst content, remove it and mute it.

  4. Delete any old custom feeds you made during a relapse. They're shortcuts back.

Reddit NSFW Settings Cheat Sheet

  • Show mature (18+) content: Web: Settings → Preferences. Android: avatar → menu → Settings → View options. iPhone: change on reddit.com. Off hides NSFW posts and communities everywhere.

  • Blur mature (18+) images and media: Next to the mature toggle on web and Android. Blurs NSFW media but keeps posts in your feed. Weaker than turning NSFW off.

  • Safe Search: Shown in search only when mature content is on. If you see it, go back and turn mature content off.

  • Old Reddit adult content options: Preferences → content options. Uncheck the "over eighteen" and NSFW search boxes.

  • Mute community: Community page → overflow menu → Mute. Removes it from Home, Popular, recommendations and notifications.

  • Leave community: Web: Joined button. Apps: menu icon → community → Joined → leave.

  • Show fewer posts like this: Overflow menu on a recommended post. Stops suggestions from that community.

  • Block user: Profile → overflow or menu icon → Block. Hides their posts and comments.

  • Show recommendations in home feed: Web: Preferences. Apps: account settings → Privacy. Off limits your feed to communities you joined.

  • Custom feed: Web: Community Details → Add To Custom Feed. Apps: menu icon → Custom Feeds. A clean, private landing page.

Reddit changes menu labels often. If a path doesn't match your screen, look under Settings → Preferences on the web or account settings in the apps.

Hard Blocks Outside Reddit (DNS, Screen Time, Blockers)

Everything above lives inside your Reddit account, and you can undo all of it in a minute. A hard block lives outside Reddit, ideally behind a passcode someone else holds.

Option 1: A DNS filter that blocks Reddit entirely

DNS filters block whole domains. They can't see a single post, so they can't tell an NSFW image on Reddit from a cat photo. What they can do is block Reddit as a site.

CleanBrowsing offers free filters with a useful difference:

  • Family Filter (185.228.168.168 and 185.228.169.168) blocks adult sites, proxy and VPN domains, and "mixed content sites (like Reddit)."

  • Adult Filter (185.228.168.10 and 185.228.169.11) blocks adult sites but, per CleanBrowsing, "sites like Reddit are allowed."

If Reddit itself is where your relapses start, use the Family Filter. If you want to keep using Reddit, the Adult Filter still blocks the porn sites that NSFW posts link out to.

To set it on an Android phone, Google's steps are: Settings → Network & internet → Private DNS, choose Private DNS provider hostname, enter the hostname, and tap Save (Android Help). CleanBrowsing's hostname for the Family Filter is family-filter-dns.cleanbrowsing.org (Adult Filter: adult-filter-dns.cleanbrowsing.org). To cover every device at home at once, set the DNS on your router; our guide on how to block porn on your router walks through it.

Option 2: iPhone Screen Time

On iOS 26, Apple's steps are: Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions (turn it on) → App Store, Media, Web, & Games → Web Content → Limit Adult Websites. Then tap Add Website under Never Allow and enter reddit.com if you want the website gone too (Apple Support).

This covers websites, not the Reddit app, so delete the app as well. iOS 27 reorganized Screen Time, and Apple's current iOS 27 page for your own iPhone doesn't list the web filter path, so menus may differ on your phone. Set a Screen Time passcode and let a trusted person choose it, or the block is only one tap deep. For a fuller phone setup, see how to block porn on iPhone and Android.

Option 3: A content blocker or browser extension

A blocker app or browser extension adds what DNS can't: blocking by keyword, specific URL paths and search terms. That matters on Reddit, where one community can be fine and the next one over is explicit. Look for a blocker that lets you add reddit.com or specific community URLs to a custom list, and that you can't disable in a few taps.

Some people keep Reddit for text and block its image hosting. Reddit serves uploaded images from its own domains (i.redd.it is one), so adding those to a custom blocklist strips most images and videos. Test it after you set it up, because Reddit uses several media domains.

If you're comparing tools, our roundup of the best free porn blockers covers free options, and the QUITTR Content Blocker filters adult sites, risky search terms and porn URLs across your phone's browsers.

Troubleshooting: When NSFW Still Shows Up

A peach popping out of a jack-in-the-box as a hand pushes the lid, when NSFW still shows up after you block NSFW on Reddit

"I turned it off, but the setting turned back on." Check whether you, or someone using your account, turned mature content on to open a single post. Reddit says Safe Search may reset when mature content is switched back on, so recheck both. Also make sure you're logged in to the right account. Settings belong to the account, not the device.

"I can't find the toggle in the iPhone app." That's expected. Reddit removed it from iOS. Use reddit.com in Safari, then restart the app.

"NSFW content appears in a regular community." It was probably never labeled. Don't open the post. Report it, then mute or leave the community if it happens more than once.

"I use a third-party Reddit app or old.reddit." Third-party clients and old Reddit have their own settings. Old Reddit has the preference checkboxes from Step 1. For third-party apps, check their content settings, or better, uninstall them. Reddit is also closing public API access for unregistered apps: no new requests after October 31, 2026, removals starting January 12, 2027, and remaining public access ending in March 2027 (Reddit changelog).

"Logged out, I can still browse." Your filters live in your account. Logged-out browsing, a second account, or the app's Anonymous Browsing mode (which Reddit says isn't associated with your account) are all ways around them, so don't count on your preferences following you. If this is your loophole, it's a sign you need a hard block from the section above.

"Reddit keeps showing me borderline posts." Your past activity is still shaping recommendations. Turn off Home feed recommendations, use "Show fewer posts like this" every time, and give it a few weeks.

"I did everything and still relapse on Reddit." Then Reddit is a trigger, not just a source. Blocking the whole site for 30 to 90 days is a reasonable call. Our guide to common relapse triggers can help you spot the pattern behind it.

Key takeaways

  • Turn off Show mature (18+) content at reddit.com → Settings → Preferences. iPhone users must do it on the website.

  • If you can see a Safe Search toggle, mature content is still on.

  • Leave and mute risky communities, turn off Home feed recommendations, and land on a clean custom feed.

  • Reddit's toggle depends on labels and can be undone in seconds, so add a hard block outside Reddit.

  • CleanBrowsing's Family Filter blocks Reddit entirely; its Adult Filter allows Reddit but blocks porn sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off NSFW in the Reddit app on iPhone?

You can't do it in the iPhone app. Reddit says that because of Apple's requirements, the NSFW toggles were removed from the iOS app. Log in to reddit.com in Safari or on a computer, go to Settings, then Preferences, and turn off the mature content toggle. The change syncs to the app.

Why does Reddit safe search keep turning off?

Reddit says your Safe Search choice stays the way you last set it unless you turn off the mature content toggle. When you turn mature content back on, Safe Search may reset. If you can see the Safe Search toggle at all, your mature content setting is on, so turn that off first.

Can I block specific NSFW subreddits on Reddit?

Yes, by muting them. Open the community, tap or click the overflow menu and choose Mute. Reddit says muting removes the community from your Home feed, recommendations, Popular feed and notifications, and you can mute up to 1,000 communities. You can still visit a muted community directly, so muting is a filter, not a lock.

Does turning off mature content block all porn on Reddit?

No. It hides posts and communities marked NSFW. Reddit requires NSFW content to be marked, but marking depends on posters and moderators, so mislabeled posts can slip into regular communities. For a real block, add a DNS filter, Screen Time or a content blocker that you can't switch off in two taps.

Which DNS filter blocks Reddit?

CleanBrowsing's free Family Filter blocks mixed-content sites, and CleanBrowsing names Reddit as an example. Its Adult Filter allows Reddit. If you only want NSFW gone and still use Reddit, use the Reddit settings plus a blocker; if Reddit itself is your trigger, the Family Filter blocks the whole site.

Will Reddit ask me to verify my age to see NSFW?

Sometimes. Reddit says it confirms you are 18+ before you can access NSFW content, usually from signals like account age. In the UK, it asks for a birthdate when you try to open mature content and you can confirm through your Apple account or Persona. If you're in recovery, you don't have to complete these checks.
